The Magical Bridge Playground is not just “another park.” It is a vision for a new kind of playground. There is no place like it in the Silicon Valley area, while many other communities have already built such parks in recognition of the varieties of abilities among us.
When the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1992, it mandated a list of requirements which public areas must adhere to ensure wheelchair users do not experience limited access. (View the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Playgrounds)
Of the 32 existing parks today, all except four parks meet these strict ADA guidelines. These four are Greer, Monroe, Ventura and Scott Park and they are due for renovations in the future.
What does this compliancy mean for a child in a wheelchair? For a parent who wants to push their kids on a swing?
Nothing.
Sand and bark is impossible for wheelchairs to roll through.
Each of our park play structures contain multiple steps which only able-bodies residents enjoy.
Imagine what it would be like if you were one of these parents or children. Imagine how you would feel having to watch others play while you sit on the sidelines because no one designed a park for you to access. Many of our residents today endure this isolation on a daily basis and we know we can do better!
The Friends of the Magical Bridge are determined to create a welcoming place for us all.
